    The Logical Goodness of Abduction in C. S. Peirce's Thought.Chihab El Khachab - 2013 - Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 49 (2):157.
“What is abduction?” asks Jaakko Hintikka in the title to his 1998 article on C. S. Peirce’s concept. The answer to Hintikka’s question is problematic on several counts. There is, to begin with, a difference between Peirce’s own views on abduction and later interpretations of abduction as “inference to the best explanation” (Minnameier 2004; Paavola 2006). There are, furthermore, tensions within Peirce’s own account of abduction, for instance, a tension between “inferential” and “instinctual” aspects of abduction (Fann 1970; Anderson 1986; (...)

Probabilities of electoral outcomes: from three-candidate to four-candidate elections.Hatem Smaoui, Dominique Lepelley & Abdelhalim El Ouafdi - 2020 - Theory and Decision 88 (2):205-229.
The main purpose of this paper is to compute the theoretical likelihood of some electoral outcomes under the impartial anonymous culture in four-candidate elections by using the last versions of software like LattE or Normaliz. By comparison with the three-candidate case, our results allow to analyze the impact of the number of candidates on the occurrence of these voting outcomes.

Knowledge and attitudes of physicians toward research ethics and scientific misconduct in Lebanon.Bilal Azakir, Hassan Mobarak, Sami Al Najjar, Azza Abou El Naga & Najlaa Mashaal - 2020 - BMC Medical Ethics 21 (1):1-10.
Background Despite the implementation of codes and declarations of medical research ethics, unethical behavior is still reported among researchers. Most of the medical faculties have included topics related to medical research ethics and developed ethical committees; yet, in some cases, unethical behaviors are still observed, and many obstacles are still conferring to applying these guidelines. Methods This cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted by interviewing randomly selected 331 Lebanese physicians across Lebanon, to assess their awareness, knowledge and attitudes on practice regarding (...)

    Teaching About Energy.Orlando Aguiar, Hannah Sevian & Charbel N. El-Hani - 2018 - Science & Education 27 (9-10):863-893.
In this article, we draw upon the Conceptual Profile Theory to discuss the negotiation of meanings related to the energy concept in an 11th grade physics classroom. This theory is based on the heterogeneity of verbal thinking, that is, on the idea that any individual or society does not represent concepts in a single way. According to this perspective, the processes of conceptualization consist of the use of a repertoire of different socially stabilized signifiers, adjusted to the context in which (...)

Opinions and attitudes of research ethics committees in Arab countries in the Middle East and North African region toward ethical issues involving biobank research.Zeinab Mohammed, Fatma Abdelgawad, Mamoun Ahram, Maha E. Ibrahim, Alya Elgamri, Ehsan Gamel, Latifa Adarmouch, Karima El Rhazi, Samar Abd ElHafeez & Henry Silverman - 2024 - Research Ethics 20 (1):1-18.
Members of research ethics committees (RECs) face a number of ethical challenges when reviewing genomic research. These include issues regarding the content and type of consent, the return of individual research results, mechanisms of sharing specimens and health data, and appropriate community engagement efforts. This article presents the findings from a survey that sought to investigate the opinions and attitudes of REC members from four Arab countries in the Middle East and North Africa (Egypt, Morocco, Sudan, and Jordan) toward these (...)

Perceptions, attitudes, and willingness of the public in low- and middle-income countries of the Arab region to participate in biobank research.Henry Silverman, Latifa Adarmouch, Nada Taha Mostafa, Manal Shahouri, Ehsan Gamel, Eman Elsebaie, Karima El-Rhazi, Zeinab Mohammed, Alya Elgamri, Maha Emad Ibrahim, Ahmed Samir Abdelhafiz, Samar Abd ElHafeez, Fatma Abdelgawad & Mamoun Ahram - 2022 - BMC Medical Ethics 23 (1):1-18.
Population-based genomics studies have proven successful in identifying genetic variants associated with diseases. High-quality biospecimens linked with informative health data from diverse segments of the population have made such research possible. However, the success of biobank research depends on the willingness of the public to participate in this type of research. We aimed to explore the factors associated with the willingness of the public to participate in biobank research from four low- and middle-income countries in the Arab region (Egypt, Jordan, (...)

Increasing reproducibility and interpretability of microbiota-gut-brain studies on human neurocognition and intermediary microbial metabolites.Esther Aarts & Sahar El Aidy - 2019 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 42.
In this commentary, we point to guidelines for performing human neuroimaging studies and their reporting in microbiota-gut-brain articles. Moreover, we provide a view on interpretational issues in MGB studies, with a specific focus on gut microbiota–derived metabolites. Thus, extending the target article, we provide recommendations to the field to increase reproducibility and relevance of this type of MGB study.

    Towards a Philosophically Guided Schema for Studying Scientific Explanation in Science Education.Sahar Alameh & Fouad Abd-El-Khalick - 2018 - Science & Education 27 (9):831-861.
Stemming from the realization of the importance of the role of explanation in the science classroom, the Next Generation Science Standards call for appropriately supporting students to learn science, argue from evidence, and provide explanations. Despite the ongoing emphasis on explanations in the science classroom, there seems to be no well-articulated framework that supports students in constructing adequate scientific explanations, or that helps teachers assess student explanations. Our motivation for this article is twofold: First, we think that the ways in (...)

They highlight key issues in developing impactful, theory-driven, and ethically grounded research and call for research that examines complex problems facing businesses and the society (e.g., big data and artificial intelligence, political polarization, and the role of CSR in generating social impact). Punitive policy responses to substance use and to abortion care constitute direct attacks on personal liberty and bodily autonomy. In this article, we leverage the concept of “syndemics” to anticipate how the already synergistic stigmas against people who use drugs and people who seek abortion services will be further compounded the Dobbs decision.

Remote workers’ free associations with working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic in Austria: The interaction between children and gender.Martina Hartner-Tiefenthaler, Eva Zedlacher & Tarek Josef el Sehity - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Empirical evidence from the COVID-19 pandemic shows that women carried the major burden of additional housework in families. In a mixed-methods study, we investigate female and male remote workers’ experiences of working from home during the pandemic. We used the free association technique to uncover remote workers’ representations about WFH. Based on a sample of 283 Austrian remote workers cohabitating with their intimate partners our findings revealed that in line with traditional social roles, men and women in parent roles are (...)

    Kingship and Legislation in Plato’s Statesman.Dimitri El Murr - 2021 - Polis 38 (3):436-449.
One of the main philosophical outcomes of Plato’s Statesman is to define statesmanship as a prescriptive form of knowledge, exercising control over subordinate tekhnai. Against a widespread scholarly view according to which the Statesman offers a radically critical view of laws, this paper argues that the art of legislation has pride of place among these subordinate arts which also include rhetoric, strategy, the art of the judge and education.

    Re‐Examining the Effect of Top‐Down Linguistic Information on Speaker‐Voice Discrimination.Ashley Quinto, Sandy Abu El Adas & Susannah V. Levi - 2020 - Cognitive Science 44 (10):e12902.
The current study replicated and extended the results from a study conducted by Narayan, Mak, and Bialystok (2017) that found effects of top‐down linguistic information on a speaker discrimination task by examining four conditions: rhymes (day‐bay), compounds (day‐dream), reverse compounds (dream‐day), and unrelated words (day‐bee). The original study found that participants were more likely to judge two words to be spoken by the same speaker if the words cohered lexically (created lexical compounds such as day‐dream) or were phonologically related (rhymes, (...)

COVID-19 has crowned1 a number of other disasters (wildfires in Australia, Desert Locusts in Kenya, an imminent WWIII merging Iran and the US), causing panic to click into place and horror to become our global predicament, making us realize that we live in the illusion of the permanence of things, of mastery, and of immortality. People’s turning to social media for trans-local news on COVID-19 has stirred great ire in the world. This led to the proliferation of dark images that (...)

Déjà vu and involuntary autobiographical memories as two distinct cases of familiarity in patients with Alzheimer's disease.Joanna Gautier, Samuel Bulteau, Guillaume Chapelet & Mohamad El Haj - 2023 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 46:e363.
The continuum between involuntary autobiographical memories and déjà vu, as proposed by Barzykowski and Moulin, can be better defined by considering research on autobiographical retrieval in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Although autobiographical retrieval in patients with Alzheimer's disease can generally be associated with a sense of familiarity, involuntary retrieval can trigger an autonoetic experience of retrieval in these patients.

    Exploration of Complex Dynamics for Cournot Oligopoly Game with Differentiated Products.S. S. Askar, Mona F. El-Wakeel & M. A. Alrodaini - 2018 - Complexity 2018:1-13.
This paper proposes a Cournot game organized by three competing firms adopting bounded rationality. According to the marginal profit in the past time step, each firm tries to update its production using local knowledge. In this game, a firm’s preference is represented by a utility function that is derived from a constant elasticity of substitution production function. The game is modeled by a 3-dimensional discrete dynamical system. The equilibria of the system are numerically studied to detect their complex characteristics due (...)

More specifically, I show how China’s non-feudal past offers resources for a future model of governance based on unity and social mobility.

Splits on Instagram: a case study of young adults’ selfies.Reham El Shazly - 2021 - Semiotica 2021 (241):185-218.
Instagram serves as a powerful instrument for youth socialization, self-expression, and self-performance in visual online spaces. Using social semiotics and multimodal discourse analysis, this study examines the potential ideological meanings and implications of selfie-shooting and sharing on Instagram on young adults’ self-concept. A corpus of 110 questionnaires, including almost 85 captioned selfies, was surveyed as multimodal utterances. In doing so, this study argues that selfies can create young adults’ split-selves while constructing their multiple personas in visual online spaces. This marks (...)

In this paper, a mathematical model was used to evaluate a dynamical hybrid system for optimizing and controlling the efficacy of plant-based protein in aquafeeds. Fishmeal, raw rapeseed meal, and a fermented meal with yeast and fungi were used as test ingredients for the determination of apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, crude protein, crude lipid, energy, and essential amino acids for olive flounder using diets containing 0.5% Cr2O3 as an inert indicator. Among all ingredients tested, FM had the maximum (...)
